Listen to PatZi's interview with Anita on June 3, 2021
Dian Fossey was an amazing woman -- so I was thrilled to talk to Anita Silvey, whose book Unforgotten is truly unforgettable.
Unforgotten: The Wild Life of Dian Fossey and Her Relentless Quest to Save Mountain Gorillas is a wonderful book. One that should be read by young and old about a woman who was passionate about her work -- and whose work changed the way we think about conservation.
Dian Fossey is an example to all of us what one can do when one is determined. It doesn't matter what school you go to -- what is important is to be passionate about what you want to do in life. Want to make the world just a little bit better? Get inspired by Fossey, who had no experience or formal scientific training. It didn't stop her. After a trip to Africa, she returned to the States determined to save the Mountain Gorillas. A meeting with the famed paleoanthropologist Louis Leakey, who was impressed with her passion, led to a scientific research funded by National Geographic. ,
For almost twenty years, Fossey lived in the mountains with the animals who became her family. Alone, often ill and working in difficult conditions, she dedicated her life to protecting them. It is heartbreaking to read about her efforts to stop the poachers who pose a constant threat. Her battles with these evil people would eventually lead to her being murdered.
But her legacy lives on through the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund and generous people like Ellen DeGeneris, who wrote the forward to this book. Thanks to them the number of gorillas living in Volcanoes National Park has doubled. As Jane Goodall, once said, "If Dian had not been there, there might be no mountain gorillas in Rwanda today."
Unforgotten is the dramatic conclusion to Silvey's trilogy of biographies on Leakey's "Trimates." As with all books in this fantastic National Geographic Kids book, it includes award winning photographs, unparalleled storytelling, sidebars, and maps, Unforgotten will inspire the next generation of budding scientists and conservationists.
