PatZi's Interview with Hannah on May 28th, 2019
How far would you go to protect the ones you love...when they may not be yours to protect?
It was a real joy to meet Hannah Mary McKinnon at Bouchercon2018. After that event I talked to her about her suspense/thriller, The Neighbors, which I enjoyed. So it was fun to invite her back to Joy on Paper to talk about her latest book, Her Secret Son.
In this suspenseful family drama, set in upstate New York, Hannah captivates readers with an engrossing story about a man, Josh, forced to deal with the tragic death of his longtime partner and with the mystery of her son's birth. Why did Grace never tell Josh about the background of the child?
Josh soon finds himself navigating through a maze of secrets and stumbling blocks as he attempts to gain legal custody of Logan, a boy he loves as his own.
It was interesting to hear how Hannah did the research for this book -- from police procedure to child services. One of the joys of writing is doing the research -- and having the opportunity to talk to interesting people who are eager to help you get things right.
Here is what people are saying about Her Secret Son. (I love the title.)
"One of those books that you just can't put down!" - Jill Orr, author of The Good Byline
"Fans of Heather Gudenkauf and Tana French will sink their teeth into this fast-paced, twisty thriller."-Booklist
"Heart-stopping suspense." -Heather Gudenkauf, New York Times bestselling author
When you finish Her Secret Son, check out The Neighbors. When Abby watches the new people moving in across the street, she has no idea that the secrets of her past will come back to turn her life around. It's another story that revolves around secrets with lots of twists and turns that will keep you turning the pages.
After reading this book I asked my friends what they would do if a long lost love moved in next door. Their responses have been amusing: One said she would put a sign in her yard: For Sale by Owner. Another said he would tell his wife that the new neighbor thought she was his mother. And yet another said that she would suggest Slinging -- I'm not sure if she means watching that new television channel or what.
What people are saying about The Neighbors:
"A graphic, gritty exploration of unfulfilled desire and deceit with an explosive finale that readers won't forget anytime soon." --Mary Kubica, New York Times bestselling author of The Good Girl"Filled with a tangled web of twists and turns, The Neighbors is a gripping, edge-of-your-seat story all the way to the shocking end." --Kimberly Belle, bestselling author of The Marriage Lie

By the way, the Audiobook version is excellent. I really enjoyed listening to Alex Wyndham's narration as I am an enthusiast for British accents.
