The Story of a U.S. Olympic Champion
It's summertime and kids are out of school -- what a wonderful time to give them a gift of a book that will inspire them.
It was such a joy for me to talk to four-time Olympic gold medalist Sanya Richards-Ross about her book, Run with Me. I remember the excitement of watching her win the Olympic Gold Medal for the 400m race at the 2012 Olympic Games in London. As she surged past her competitors in the last 50 meters of the race, I was holding my breath. And when she wrapped the American flag over her shoulders and ran around the track, I jumped up from my chair and cheered. Seeing the joy on her face was truly inspirational.
So I was thrilled when she joined me on Joy on Paper to talk Run with Me is published by Zonderkids. As always, they have , created a beautiful book for kids and young adults. I love how they have used sideboxes with extra stories or anecdotes in each chapter. This makes for easy and fun reading. Sanya's messages at the end of each chapter connect her life experiences with her faith in God.
From the age of seven, running on the dusty tracks in under the Jamaican sun, it was clear that she had a God-given talent. It was through dedication to her sport and the love of her family that she found the strength to persevere to become one of the most remarkable women athletes of all time.
What is remarkable in the book is that Sanya's faith comes shining through in all that she has accomplished. As she shares the highlights of her amazing career, she incorporates the lessons she has learned along the way and explains that sports parallels in life. It is all about doing your best and living a good life. Her Christian values are a major source of strength and have kept her, literally, on the right track.
Sanya reveals the 4 Ps -- a model of behavior created by her coach, Clyde Hart -- that have been important in achieving success:
PUSH - PACE - POSITION - POISE
You will enjoy this interview with Sanya -- she's funny and sweet and so eager to make a difference in the world by sharing her joy of running. You can hear the love in her voice when she talks about her family in Jamaica, her trainers and her husband.
Her face -- pure joy!
Like the joy we find on paper -- whether writing or reading -- the joy of running is a beautiful thing.
She is the founder of the Sanya Richards-Ross Fast Track Program in Kingston, Jamaica which has provided over 700 children with literacy training, physical education, and healthy meals. Her sports clinics educate, empower and provide youth with tools and strategies to excel both on and off the track.
