Wow! What a joy to talk to Ed Hajim about his new book, THE ISLAND OF THE FOUR P’s

Last year we talked about the story of his life: On the Road Less Traveled: The Unlikely Journey from the Orphanage to the Boardroom. (You can listen to that interview below.) It’s a heart wrenching but very inspirational book about how a person can come from a difficult situation and make it to the top-with some luck and with lots of hard work. I was so  impressed with his story and particularly about his philosophy. He calls it the 4 Ps — the fundamental principles to follow to become a successful and giving person.

The Island of the Four Ps is written in the form of a fable. An easy to read–and fun to read–story of a young man starting on a journey of discovery. Along the way he meets a mentor, a young lady, and lots of generous people who share their insights into the magic of discovering the power of the 4 Ps. Told in allegory that is relatable and never preachy, this book is a must read for everyone–because it is never too late to find a purpose.

It is also the perfect gift to give any young person in your life. It should be required reading for high school seniors.

About the book:
The Island of the Four Ps, a spinoff of Ed Hajim’s bestselling memoir On The Road Less Traveled, is a modern fable about a young man, Marketus, who leaves home for the first time and travels to an island on a quest to answer some of life’s basic questions. The book, a conversation with the hero’s inner voice, is divided into four fundamental sections—passions, principles, partners, and plans—the key ingredients to making a successful life, says the author. This magical trip takes Marketus and his guide to four villages named after the four Ps. As he enters each place, Marketus places a green pea into a special device, which allows him to store his thoughts, retrieve them, and integrate them. This engaging tale features full-color illustrations throughout, this parable comes to life in the most unusual way. Perfect for those looking for inspiration in an ever-changing world, Marketus and the Four Peas offers a timeless message for everyone.

About the author:
His accomplishments would take a page to write about–but the most important thing to know about this man, who has a school named after him and a statue of him, is that he is a good man. He mentors. He gives. He cares. He is a joy to so many.

“There are rare memoirs that tell us something about who we are as a people and what we are capable of accomplishing, no matter what adversity confronts us. Ed Hajim’s On The Road Less Travelled is one of them. This narrative is not just a Horatio Alger “rags to riches” tale. It’s a story of the will to overcome the kind of adversity that can crush the spirit…but not this one. If you need a little inspiration in a time of despair, this is the book for you. It’s part of American history."

I simply love this book. ON THE ROAD LESS TRAVELED is so much more than a memoir. Ed Hajim has written a book that is fast-paced and begins like a thriller as he writes about how at the age of 3, his father kidnapped him and fled across America on Route 66. A heartbreaking story of a boy being told that his mother was dead. And then being abandoned by a father who went off to sea. Shunted from one orphanage to another, Ed Hajim could have had such a sad and terrible life. But even in his loneliness and in his chaotic life, he decided that he would not be a victim. He would be a winner. He would go to a great college. And most importantly, he would lead a good life. There are places in this book where my eyes filled with tears. And other times when I laughed out loud at his determination and adventures.

Now a highly successful businessman and philanthropist, he shares his story and the wisdom he has gained over the years. He calls it the “The 4 P’s” for a successful and happy life. A life worth living. A life worth sharing.

I wish every 18-year old would read this book. They will realize how much they have to be thankful for–and how much they can achieve if they set themselves on the right path and with the right attitude.

More aout the book:

At the age of 3, a boy Ed Hajim is kidnapped by his father, driven cross-country, and told his mother had died. He presses his face against the car window, watches the miles pass and wonders where life will take him. This is a beautifully written memoir filled with human drama, wisdom and timeless life lessons, Ed Hajim tells his improbable story of how he bounced from foster homes to orphanages, in a daily struggle to survive, to living the American dream as an accomplished Wall Street executive and model family man with great moral fiber and the means to give back to a world that seemed intent on rejecting him.
