I was an absolute treat to talk to Steve Berry again. Book #17 in the Cotton Malone series is a real winner. The Last Kingdom takes place in Bavaria where I spent much time researching a book about Sisi, the wife of Emperor Franz Joseph of Austria. So I not only know the area very wel—I have visited the three castles mentioned in the book. They were built by the Bavarian king, Ludwig the II, who is the subject of the book. An enigmatic, often paranoid, always a bit delusional, Ludwig had a big secret and Steve has used that real story to write a thriller with enough twists and turns to keep you engrossed and wondering how much of the story is true. Knowing, Steve Berry’s writing as well as I do, I’m sure most of it is real. He has an uncanny way of discovering little tidbits in history and turning them into a multi-layered, twisty story. Cotton Malone is a great character. One of my favorites and we learn more about the background of the antiquarian bookstore owner. It’s fascinating.
We talked about so many things–I only wish it had been longer. I could talk to him all day long–his Georgia drawl is so lovely. You will enjoy this interview, I loved it!
ABOUT THE BOOK
From celebrated New York Times bestselling author, Steve Berry, comes the latest Cotton Malone adventure, in which the discovery of a lost historical document challenges the global might of the United States.
King Ludwig II of Bavaria was an enigmatic figure who was deposed in 1886, mysteriously drowning three days later. Eccentric to the point of madness, history tells us that in the years before he died Ludwig engaged in a worldwide search for a new kingdom, one separate, apart, and in lieu of Bavaria. A place he could retreat into and rule as he wished. But a question remains: did he succeed?
