There are so many things I enjoyed about The Beautiful Risk by Lynn Hightower. It brought back fond memories of my own trip to Mont Blanc, the setting for the book. Lynn’s writing is very atmospheric and she captures the beauty of the location–which becomes a character in the book. If you haven’t been there, then this book might just inspire you to take a trip to France. Not to climb the mountain! It’s very dangerous and not for the faint of heart.
The story also features a dog, named Leo, who is the support dog for the main character, Junie Lagarde, who has a hearing loss. Much of the story revolves around finding Leo, who went missing when her husband’s plane crashed on the mountain. Finding Leo means solving the mystery behind her husband’s death. Was his plane sabotaged?
This is a suspenseful story that tackles many issues, including the heartbreak of becoming a widow. As Junie Lagarde searches for her beloved dog, she also learns that life goes on.
