It was so much fun to talk to Carlton Ward, Jr. the National Geographic author and photographer of the beautiful book: PATH OF THE PANTHER: New Hope for Wild Florida.
Carlton Ward’s goal is to create a better understanding of the panther—the state animal of Florida and the last big cat surviving east of the Mississippi River. It was nearly driven to extinction. In the 1980s there were fewer than 20 individuals, but since then heroic conservation efforts has brought a resurgence so that today there are nearly 200 panthers.
To create awareness of the plight of these beautiful animals, Carlton created an organization to protect the Florida Wildlife Corridor. His adventures let him to trek from the Everglades to Georgia in 2012 and from the Everglades Headwaters around the Gulf of Mexico to Alabama in 2015. Thanks to NatGeo and his team of enthusiastic conservationist, he hopes to ensure that the panthers important place in Florida will prevent them from extinction. Path of the Panther is a story of new hope for the recovery of an iconic endangered species and its Everglades home—and a global example of how protecting wildlife corridors can sustain balance for nature and people.
Carlton Ward spent thousands of hours to capture the amazingly beautiful photographs in this book. Get one for yourself and get one as a gift.
Father’s Day is coming up. It would be a gift that will be treasured.
