Better Half by Alli Frank & Asha Youmans

It was a JOY to talk to two amazing authors who have certainly found ‘joy on paper’ in their collaboration. Ali Frank and Asha Youmans are so enthusiastic–they are certainly a dynamic duo!

Their latest book THE BETTER HALF is part comedy, part a reflection of the world we live in.

There are so many great things to like about this book. I love that the main characters are in their 40’s. That the story is about a deep and lasting friendship that weathers the storms life throws at them.

I particularly enjoyed that the main character, Nina Morgan Clark, has become the first Black female head of a famous private school. Not only does it open the story up to the challenges of a woman rising to the top, but also the inherent problems of having to deal with school boards and hovering parents.

Both Alli and Asha know what it means to be teachers–so their insights into the world of a private school are fascinating and realistic.

The story begins with a trip that Nina takes with her best friend, Marisol, to celebrate her new job. It’s a girls just want to have fun kind of vacation. But with the added twist that Nina meets a man who opens up a new world for her. And the proverbial can of worms. He’s white. She’s black. Does it really matter?

The Better Half has many layers that add depth to this story. There’s Xandra, Nina’s daughter, who plays a big role in the story. And Nina’s father, who is back after the loss of his beloved wife.

With humor and deep understanding, the writing team of Alli Frank and Asha Youmans has created a book that you will enjoy.
